Shifting states of intimacy: Human-AI relationships in the digital age

Abstract

This thesis provides a comprehensive examination of intimacy in human AI relationships. It reviews the literature on intimacy in human-to-human relationships and employs a mixed methods design to conceptualize and develop a multidimensional measurement scale for AI intimacy. The research includes four studies presented across five chapters. Chapter 1 outlines the aims of the thesis, research philosophy, the identified gaps in existing scholarship, and the research questions. Chapter 2 presents a bibliometric analysis of the literature on human AI close relationships and intimacy, offering an overview of prevailing research themes, methodological tendencies, and conceptual developments, and identifying areas requiring further investigation. Chapter 3 reports a qualitative study involving AI users and experts in order to ground the construct of AI intimacy. The findings reveal relational processes and experiential dimensions that have not been previously examined and contribute to a more holistic understanding of human AI relational dynamics. Drawing on these insights, Chapter 4 develops the measurement scale. An initial item pool is generated from the qualitative findings and from existing intimacy scales in human-to-human research. Factor analysis refines the scale and confirms five dimensions of AI intimacy, specifically emotional, cognitive, recreational, intellectual, and social intimacy. The final chapter validates the scale by framing it within a broader nomological network. The findings show that partner quality positively predicts perceived AI intimacy, and self-disclosure is a strong antecedent of AI intimacy. In turn, AI intimacy increases commitment and enhances word-of-mouth intentions. The concluding chapter discusses the theoretical and practical contributions of the research and outlines its limitations and implications for future work.

Esta tese oferece uma análise abrangente da intimidade nas relações entre humanos e IA. A tese explora a literatura sobre intimidade em relações humano-humano e utiliza um desenho de métodos mistos para conceptualizar e desenvolver uma escala multidimensional para medir a intimidade dos humanos com a IA. A investigação inclui quatro estudos apresentados ao longo de cinco capítulos. O Capítulo 1 descreve os objetivos da tese, a filosofia de investigação, as lacunas identificadas na literatura e as questões de investigação. O Capítulo 2 apresenta uma análise bibliométrica da literatura sobre relações próximas, íntimas, entre humanos e a IA, oferecendo uma visão geral dos temas predominantes, tendências metodológicas e desenvolvimentos conceituais, além de identificar áreas que requerem investigação adicional. O Capítulo 3 apresenta um estudo qualitativo envolvendo utilizadores de IA e especialistas, com o objetivo de fundamentar o construto de intimidade com a IA. Os resultados revelam processos relacionais e dimensões experienciais que não haviam sido previamente examinados, contribuindo para uma compreensão mais holística da dinâmica relacional humano-IA. Com base nessas perceções, o Capítulo 4 desenvolve a escala de medida. Um conjunto inicial de itens é gerado com base nos resultados qualitativos e nas escalas de intimidade existentes em estudos sobre relações humano-humano. A análise fatorial refina a escala e confirma cinco dimensões da intimidade entre humanos e a IA: emocional, cognitiva, recreativa, intelectual e social. O capítulo final suporta a escala, enquadrando-a numa rede nomológica mais ampla. Os resultados mostram que a qualidade do parceiro prediz positivamente a intimidade percebida com a IA e que a autoexposição é um forte antecedente da intimidade com a IA. Por sua vez, a intimidade com a IA aumenta o comprometimento e melhora as intenções de comunicação boca a boca. O último capítulo discute as contribuições teóricas e práticas da pesquisa, bem como suas limitações e implicações para trabalhos futuros.
