Motivações e desafios dos voluntários da Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa no apoio a refugiados

Abstract

O voluntariado é um elemento fundamental no apoio a refugiados, desempenhando um papel crucial na sua adaptação e integração. A Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa (CVP) tem sido uma organização central neste processo, mobilizando voluntários para prestar assistência a populações vulneráveis. Este estudo procura abordar a falta de investigação sobre as transformações recentes no voluntariado, analisando as motivações e desafios enfrentados pelos voluntários da CVP no apoio aos refugiados em Portugal e explorando fatores que influenciam a sua experiência e envolvimento, oferecendo recomendações para melhorar a gestão e sustentabilidade desta prática. A metodologia adotada corresponde a uma abordagem qualitativa, incluindo a aplicação de um questionário a 3 voluntários e de entrevistas a 3 colaboradores de duas diferentes delegações da CVP, nomeadamente Bragança e Braga. Os resultados evidenciaram, entre outros aspetos, a sobreposição dos desejos de crescimento pessoal dos voluntários em relação aos seus objetivos de aquisição de competências profissionais, e a influência das crises mediáticas no número de pessoas que se candidatam à prestação de voluntariado, relacionando estes fatores com a existência de alguns entraves burocráticos ao seu processo de integração na organização. As conclusões deste estudo contribuem para a reflexão sobre o papel do voluntariado na resposta humanitária e sugerem estratégias que podem fortalecer a gestão, retenção e valorização dos voluntários, promovendo uma atuação mais eficaz, sustentável e alinhada com os objetivos humanitários da organização.

Volunteering is a key element in providing assistance to refugees, playing a crucial role in their adaptation and integration. The Portuguese Red Cross (PRC) has been a central organization in this process, mobilizing volunteers to provide assistance to vulnerable populations. This study seeks to address the lack of research on recent transformations in volunteering, analyzing the motivations and challenges faced by CVP volunteers in supporting refugees in Portugal and exploring factors that influence their experience and involvement, offering recommendations to improve the management and sustainability of this practice. The adopted methodology matches a qualitative approach, including a questionnaire administered to 3 volunteers, and interviews with 3 staff members from two different PRC delegations, namely Bragança and Braga. The results revealed, among other aspects, the overlap between volunteers’ personal growth aspirations and their goals of acquiring professional skills, and the influence of mediadriven crises on the number of people applying for volunteer work, relating these factors to the existence of bureaucratic barriers to their integration process within the organization. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the role of volunteering in the humanitarian response and suggest strategies to strengthen volunteer management, retention, and recognition, promoting a more effective, sustainable operation aligned with the organization's humanitarian objectives.
