Sindicalismo e outros movimentos sociais : Motivações e formas de participação dos jovens

Abstract

A presente dissertação teve como principal objetivo compreender quais os fatores que explicam as motivações dos jovens para o seu envolvimento e participação em estruturas sindicais e em organizações de outros movimentos sociais. Os fatores passam por três dimensões analíticas identificadas: processo de individualização; características organizacionais e vocacionais destas estruturas de ação coletiva; e a relação das mesmas com partidos políticos. Verificar se existe um maior alinhamento dos jovens com outros movimentos sociais que não o sindical também era um objetivo da pesquisa. A investigação revela-se particularmente relevante dadas as atuais discussões sobre a forma como os jovens participam política e civicamente, sobretudo no contexto da dita crise sindical. A pesquisa adota uma abordagem qualitativa. Os dados empíricos foram recolhidos através da realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas a jovens envolvidos em várias formas de ação coletiva, a dirigentes e porta-vozes associativos, e a académicos da área estudada. A análise de conteúdo foi a técnica usada na análise dos dados. Os resultados revelam que as três dimensões analíticas contribuem para explicar as motivações para o envolvimento e formas de participação dos jovens em estruturas sindicais e em organizações de outros movimentos sociais. Quanto ao maior alinhamento dos jovens com um ou outro movimento, os resultados revelam a complexidade desta questão. A investigação contribui para o debate sobre a relação que os jovens estabelecem com a ação coletiva, permitindo alargar o conhecimento sobre as suas motivações, experiências e opiniões no contexto do funcionamento interno de estruturas sindicais e organizações de outros movimentos sociais.

The present dissertation aimed to understand which factors explain the motivations behind young people’s involvement and participation in trade union organizations and other social movement organizations. The factors are three identified analytic dimensions: process of individualization; collective action structures’ organizational and vocational characteristics; and these structures’ relation with political parties. Verifying if young people are more aligned with other social movements that aren’t the trade union movement is also an aim of the research. This investigation is particularly relevant considering the present discussions about the way young people politically and civically participate, especially in the context of the said union crisis. The research adopts a qualitative approach. The empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with young people involved in various forms of collective action, with spokespeople from these structures, and academics from the area studied. Content analysis was the technique used for data analysis. The results show that the three analytic dimensions contribute to explaining the motivations behind young people’s involvement and forms of participation in trade union organizations and other social movements organizations. When it comes to young people’s bigger alignment with one or the other movement, the results show the complexity of this question. The investigation contributes to the debate concerning the relation that young people establish with collective action, allowing to expand the knowledge about their motivations’, experiences and opinions in the context of trade union organizations and other social movements organizations’ internal function.
