Perfil cultural da Nigéria

Abstract

A Nigéria, antiga colónia Britânica, apresenta uma heterogeneidade cultural justificada pela presença de 250 etnias e 500 línguas faladas no país. A diversidade cultural é responsável por uma série de conflitos tribais na região, que dificultam a unidade nacional, contudo a dimensão geográfica, a densidade populacional e o poderio económico assente na exportação petrolífera são responsáveis pelo gigantismo nigeriano na África e no mundo. Ainda assim a maioria da população é afetada por inúmeras mazelas que repercutem na pobreza existente e exibem uma série de controvérsias desencadeadas pela corrupção, instabilidade política, violação dos Direitos humanos e poluição ambiental, que permanecem independentemente do crescimento do PIB. A presente dissertação tem como objetivo analisar a cultura e o ambiente empresarial da Nigéria, enfatizando algumas idiossincrasias particularmente presentes no país que têm forte influência na cultura organizacional. O propósito do estudo visa igualmente caracterizar o perfil cultural da Nigéria, a partir da análise dos condicionalismos geográficos, demográficos e das principais características dos elementos étnicos e religiosos que compõem a diversidade cultural no país. Para a construção dessa análise foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica que inclui as contribuições de Gert Hofstede Richard Gesteland, mas também pesquisas documentais em fontes vinculadas ao FMI, ao Banco Mundial e a outras entidades e organismos, que enriqueceram o propósito do estudo. As perspetivas proporcionadas por estas fontes permitiram classificar alguns aspetos preponderantes da cultura nigeriana, exibindo as principais características e tendências do povo, que mostram os reflexos da cultura nacional na cultura organizacional do país.

Nigéria, a former British colony, has a cultural heterogeneity justified by the presence of 250 ethnic groups and 500 languages spoken in the country. Cultural diversity is responsible for a number of tribal conflicts in the region that hamper national unity, yet the geographic dimension, population density and economic power based on oil exports are responsible for Nigerian gigantism in Africa and the world. Yet the majority of the population is affected by innumerable ills that react to existing poverty and exhibit a series of controversies triggered by corruption, political instability, human rights violations and environmental pollution that remain independent of GDP growth. This dissertation aims to analyze the culture and business environment of Nigeria, emphasizing some idiosyncrasies particularly present in the country that have a strong influence on the organizational culture. The purpose of the study is also to characterize the cultural profile of Nigeria, based on the analysis of the geographical, demographic and main features of the ethnic and religious elements that make up the cultural diversity in the country. In order to construct this analysis, a bibliographical research was carried out, which includes some influential authors, notably the contributions of Gert Hofstede Richard Gesteland, as well as documentary research on sources linked to the IMF, the World Bank and other entities and organizations that have enriched purpose of the study. The perspectives provided by these authors allowed to classify some preponderant aspects of the Nigerian culture exhibiting the main characteristics and tendencies of the people, that show the reflexes of the national culture in the organizational culture of the country.
