Caminho entre cotas

Abstract

O projeto da Biblioteca designado por Sophia de Mello Breyner explora a integração entre topografia, espaço urbano e paisagem em Benfica. O terreno inclinado é interpretado como uma oportunidade de projeto, dando origem a um percurso acessível que conecta diferentes cotas, marcado por uma rampa em betão pigmentado, vermelho, com óxido de ferro que orienta o visitante pelos diversos espaços. A biblioteca organiza-se em três volumes, enterrados e aflorados, que se fundem no terreno com coberturas ajardinadas, pátios e aberturas zenitais que permitem a entrada de luz natural e reforçam a relação entre interior e exterior. Existem duas possibilidades de percursos que, por sua vez, estruturam o edifício: o percurso do utilizador, que atravessa os espaços públicos e de leitura, e o percurso do trabalhador, que garante o acesso às áreas técnicas e operacionais, ambos em permanente diálogo com a arquitetura e a paisagem envolvente. O caminho rasga o terreno, molda a arquitetura, e a materialidade complementa a paisagem.

The project for the Sophia de Mello Breyner Library explores the integration of topography, urban space, and landscape in Benfica. The sloping site is embraced as a design opportunity, giving rise to an accessible pathway that connects different levels, defined by a pigmented red concrete ramp, colored with iron oxide, which guides visitors through the various spaces. The library is organized into three volumes, both embedded and emerging from the terrain, featuring green roofs, patios, and skylights that bring in natural light and reinforce the connection between interior and exterior. There are two main circulation routes that structure the building: the visitor’s route, which passes through the public and reading areas, and the staff route, which ensures access to the technical and operational zones — both in constant dialogue with the architecture and the surrounding landscape. The path carves through the terrain, shapes the architecture, and its materiality complements the landscape.
