Between the architectural program and beauty

Título próprio: Between the architectural program and beauty
Autoria: Mendes, P.; Gomes, M.
Resumo: Utility and beauty are two architectural design foundation stones. Over time, architecture has developed multiple combinations and interpretations of these two elements. Despite all the contextual and cultural changes, which may differentiate distinct designs, the architectural practice can be delineate as laying at the contextual root, rather than providing a direct response to procedure and standards. The overall practice of architecture embraces a synthesis of a wide range of elements interpreted in different perspectives throughout history. The practice shapes specific responses transforming and adapting places, spaces, techniques and materials to different contexts.
The investigation is part of an ongoing process centered on themes and issues related to architectural design. The research guideline focusses on the What and How of architectural design. In the present paper the topics arise from a text of Álvaro Siza: „Beauty, the absolute condition of functionality” (Siza, 2018). From Álvaro Siza statement beauty and function are considered inseparable in building good architecture synthesis. The paper explores the relation between the architectural program and beauty. Frequently these two components are considered incompatible and opposite, although other perspectives ought to be explored. The dialectic overlap and boundaries between the architectural program and beauty will be inquired. The perspective allows identifying operative relations, far from the notion of contradiction or opposition. The investigation context is grounded in the universe of architectural design. On one side it can be found beauty, characterised by an idealistic desire for perfection and truth. We are dealing with an immaterial universe. On the other, the architectural program stands for the architectural practical and useful attributes of use. Through a holistic methodology it is expected an operative input to architectural design practice. In the same direction we hope to contribute for the enlargement of the range of level of self-reflective practice.

A lógica socioespacial da favela: padrões da informalidade auto-organizada

Título próprio: A lógica socioespacial da favela: padrões da informalidade auto-organizada
Autoria: Loureiro. V.; Medeiros, V.; Guerreiro, M. R.

Informed design decision-making: from digital analysis to urban design. A contemporary approach for the redevelopment of public open spaces

Título próprio: Informed design decision-making: from digital analysis to urban design. A contemporary approach for the redevelopment of public open spaces
Autoria: Pezzica, C.; Lopes, J. V.; Paio, A. C. R.
Resumo: This paper describes a novel approach to explore public open spaces multidimensional design space and to guide decision-making in the design of highly informed, evidence-based, architectural solutions. It presents an overview of the most relevant design variables and constraints that are useful in planning contemporary and sustainable public open spaces that trace the social and cultural values of local communities. This work aims at providing an holistic guidance for the development of better urban design proposals for the contemporary city environment. More specifically, this work seeks to synchronously characterize urban spaces at a multi-scale and multi-dimensional level, both quantitatively and qualitatively, by collecting contributions from Space Syntax, Public Life Studies, Building Science and Environmental/Comfort Analysis in public open spaces. Many advanced digital tools are used in order to deal with the data and, iteratively, generate and test different design proposals. The proposed methodology is presented through its implementation and testing in the development of a new experimental project for Largo da Graça, a square located in Lisbon historic centre, which is suitable for testing many different design solutions. This experiment generated a digital design workflow with all the steps undertaken to solve the various design problems identified by considering the efficiency targets (centrality, connectivity, enclosure, thermal comfort, security, social equity and interaction). The process comprises a sequence of comparative design tests and records the choices made when dealing with latent information underlying changing conditions in the use of public space and the programmatic malleability of the Portuguese plaza. The adopted design strategy, as well as the examples extracted from the workflow, are used to illustrate the proposed methodology with a hands-on approach. Ultimately, this paper seeks to tight the link between research and sustainable design, adequate for effectively supporting and orientating the planning and design of better public open spaces.
