Resumo: This article discusses key variables that shape the willingness of faculty to work with librarians in higher education establishments. We use the Librarian-Library/Faculty Relationship Model to highlight the variables which faculty members consider to be the most relevant in that relationship. The article begins with a discussion of the causes of tensions between faculty and librarians. This is followed by a descriptive and co-relational study of the ISCTE-IUL University Institute of Lisbon library. The study uses qualitative and quantitative methods, namely a focus group and a survey. There was a good fit between the Librarian-Library/Faculty Relationship Model and the data (CMIN/DF=4.067), and the model explained 58% of the dependent variable, namely faculty willingness to collaborate with librarians. Our final model confirmed the relationships proposed in our initial model, and allowed us to identify a range of new relationships, which may contribute to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of different socio-cultural processes (included as variables in the model) affecting the relationship between faculty and librarians, so as to what factors shape the willingness of faculty to collaborate with librarians. The model shows that 14% of the willingness of faculty to collaborate with librarians can be attributed to key attributes of faculty, namely gender, age, department, academic qualification, professional category, and the length of career.

Resumo: As funções mais importantes da universidade são a formação, a investigação e a transferência de conhecimento. Nela, a informação é utilizada não só no âmbito dessas funções, mas também no planeamento estratégico e na gestão. A gestão do conhecimento nas universidades realiza-se com os seguintes objetivos: melhorar os processos de criação de conhecimento por parte dos investigadores, de transmissão de conhecimento por parte dos professores, de aprendizagem por parte dos estudantes e de utilização do conhecimento nas atividades de gestão que apoiam os processos anteriores. As bibliotecas universitárias são confrontadas com três mudanças importantes no mundo da comunicação académica: a primeira é o aumento das publicações periódicas disponíveis, em texto integral, na internet, o que aumentou as possibilidades de acesso à informação resultante de atividades de investigação; a segunda decorre do desenvolvimento da internet que permite e promove a democratização do conhecimento; a terceira corresponde ao desenvolvimento do movimento de acesso livre ao conhecimento. Neste artigo, apresentamos o desenvolvimento de repositórios como uma oportunidade para a alteração do posicionamento profissional dos bibliotecários nas instituições de ensino superior, tornando esse posicionamento estratégico.; Teaching, research and knowledge transfer are core functions of all research higher education institutions in which information is used to perform those tasks but also on strategical planning and management. The main goals of knowledge management at higher education institutions are: to improve knowledge creation processes performed by researchers, to improve knowledge transmission by professors, to improve learning processes performed by students and to improve knowledge use on management activities that support all the processes above mentioned. University libraries have to face three important changes in the world of academic communication: first, the rise of full text periodicals available on Internet that has multiplied the opportunities of free information access; the second is a consequence of internet development which allows and promotes knowledge democratization; the third is the Open Access Movement to knowledge. In this paper we present the development of repositories as an opportunity for librarians in order to change their professional positioning in higher education institutions and assuming a strategic professional positioning.; Las funciones más importantes de la universidad son la formación, la investigación y la transferencia de conocimiento. En ella, la información es utilizada no solo en el ámbito de tales funciones, sino también en la planificación estratégica y en la gestión. La gestión del conocimiento en las universidades se realiza con los siguientes objetivos: mejorar los procesos de creación del conocimiento por parte de los investigadores, de transmisión de conocimiento por parte de los profesores, de aprendizaje por parte de los estudiantes y de utilización del conocimiento en las actividades de gestión que apoyan los procesos anteriores. Las bibliotecas universitarias son confrontadas con tres cambios importantes en el mundo de la comunicación académica: la primera es el aumento de las publicaciones periódicas disponibles, en texto integral, en la internet, lo que aumentó las posibilidades de acceso a la información resultante de actividades de investigación; la segunda resulta del desarrollo de la internet que permite y promueve la democratización del conocimiento; la tercera corresponde al desarrollo del movimiento de acceso libre al conocimiento. En este artículo, presentamos el desarrollo de repositorios como una oportunidad para la alteración del posicionamiento profesional de los bibliotecarios en las instituciones de educación superior, tornando estratégico ese posicionamiento.</summary>

Resumo: La metodología en los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje en los Centros de Enseñanza Superior está experimentando unos cambios profundos que también los implica en la propia organización educativa. A ello hay que añadir que los avances tecnológicos e Internet han contribuido de forma decisiva a un aprendizaje más abierto e interactivo que obliga a los profesionales de la información a adoptar nuevos roles para hacer frente a los retos que se le presentan, así como a nuevos comportamientos para lograr los compromisos que se les demandan. Atendiendo a estas premisas y teniendo en cuenta sus implicaciones, el objetivo de este trabajo es definir el nuevo concepto de bibliotecario en los Centros de Enseñanza Superior.; The methodologies of teaching-learning in higher education centers are experiencing profound changes that also involve changes in the educational organization itself. Technological advances and the Internet have contributed decisively to a more open and interactive learning experience that requires information professionals to adopt new roles to meet the challenges, as well as new behaviors to achieve the commitments required of them. Based on these assumptions and considering their implications, the aim of this paper is to define the new concept of librarian in higher education centers.

Resumo: Los cambios que el proceso de Bolonia ha impuesto en la educación universitaria no sólo atañen a la docencia sino también a organismos incluidos dentro de la propia institución cuya aportación en el proceso enseñanza-aprendizaje es vital para cumplir los requisitos exigidos. Entre ellos, la biblioteca universitaria y sus responsables ocupan un lugar central que los obliga a replantearse sus cometidos profesionales y a adoptar una metodología de trabajo que ayude a la adquisición de las competencias y habilidades que actualmente la sociedad demanda. Un primer paso para delimitar el nuevo rol del bibliotecario universitario consiste en analizar las percepciones que los docentes tienen sobre ellos y, de esta manera, planificar la necesaria e imprescindible colaboración entre ambos colectivos.; The changes in higher education brought about by the Bologna process not only&#xD;
affect teaching, but also units within the institution that play a critical role in assuring&#xD;
compliance of the teaching-learning process with the requirements. Among them is the&#xD;
university library, whose offi cers occupy a key position that requires them to rethink&#xD;
their professional responsibilities and to adopt a methodology for facilitating the&#xD;
acquisition of the competencies and skills demanded by today’s society. A fi rst step for&#xD;
defi ning the new role of university librarians consists of analyzing the faculty’s perceptions&#xD;
of them, in order to plan for the necessary collaboration between the two collectives.
