Plantas Medicinais e Medicina Tradicional de S. Tomé e Príncipe

Abstract

Entre 1993 e 2010 tem vindo a ser efectuado um Estudo Etnofarmacológico em S. Tomé e Príncipe (STP), em colaboração com o Ministério da Saúde de STP e num trabalho directo e contínuo com os mais respeitados terapeutas tradicionais locais, tendo sido recolhidas, identificadas e estudadas cerca de 350 espécies de plantas medicinais e registadas mais de 1.000 receitas tradicionais. Têm vindo a ser realizados estudos fitoquímicos e farmacológicos de diversas plantas medicinais e/ou aromáticas, com o objectivo de desenvolver substâncias com um potencial terapêutico interessante nas doenças de maior incidência na região (antimaláricos, anti-bacterianos, anti-fúngicos). Através da recolha de informação de plantas usadas tradicionalmente, e do seu posterior estudo etnofarmacológico, poderão ser seleccionadas as que demonstrarem serem seguras, eficazes e facilmente acessíveis ou cultiváveis, e poderão integrar-se estas plantas validadas no sistema nacional de saúde, em particular no que diz respeito aos cuidados de saúde primários. De facto, este é o caminho mais adequado para assegurar um correcto aproveitamento de plantas medicinais indígenas, documentando simultaneamente a herança cultural dos velhos terapeutas tradicionais e impedindo a perda deste notável saber.

An Ethnopharmacological Study of S. Tome e Principe (STP) has been carried out between 1993 and 2010, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of STP and with the most respected local traditional healers, having been collected, identified and studied about 350 species of medicinal plants, and reported more than 1.000 traditional recipes. Phytochemical and pharmacological studies of various selected medicinal plants and/or aromatic plants have been carried out with the purpose of developing substances with a potential therapeutic interest in the major region diseases (anti-malarials, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal). Through the collection of information on plants traditionally used and the results of their ethnopharmacological studies, a selection could be made from those that demonstrate that are safe, effective and easily accessible, thus allowing the integration of validated medicinal plants into the national health system, particularly in respect to primary health care. In fact, this is the most appropriate way to ensure the proper utilization of indigenous medicinal plants, while documenting the cultural heritage of the old traditional healers and preventing the loss of this remarkable knowledge.
