A alma do imperador: a pontamentos sobre a realeza sagrada no Japão

Abstract

Esta tese está dividida em duas partes. A primeira é uma contextualização histórica e teórica da temática da realeza sagrada, à luz dos trabalhos de duas figuras centrais no âmbito deste tema: James George Frazer e Arthur Maurice Hocart. A esta contextualização estende-se a contribuição de outros autores mais contemporâneos, como Luc de Heusch e Lucien Scubla. O cerne desta primeira parte será delinear aquelas que foram as principais teorizações destes autores, demonstrando os múltiplos elementos recorrentes que estão presentes em contextos sociais e culturais distintos - a importância do ritual, o rei como um articulador das ordens sociais e naturais, a sacralidade do rei - e elucidando em que medida muitas destas questões serão importantes nesta tese. A partir desta contextualização, a segunda parte desta tese examina o caso da realeza sagrada no Japão. Através da análise das particularidades que definem a superestrutura simbólica, altamente ritualizada, política e social que é a família imperial japonesa, tento mostrar de que forma este exemplo desenvolve e expande as problematizações criadas por Hocart e Frazer. Deste modo, proponho tanto a reformulação de certos elementos conceptuais e ideológicos, como a revitalização do estudo da realeza no âmbito da antropologia, mostrando como é extremamente atual e profundamente antropológico, que lida não só com questões associadas à estruturação da vida social e cultural, como também com a nossa própria condição como seres humanos.

This thesis is divided into two parts. The first is a historical and theoretical contextualization of sacred kingship in light of the works of two central figures of this thematic: James George Frazer and Arthur Maurice Hocart. I extend this contextualization by highlighting the contribution of more contemporary authors, such as Luc de Heusch and Lucien Scubla. The main focus of this first part is to delineate the most important theorizations made by these authors, demonstrating the recurrence of multiple elements that are present in distinct social and cultural contexts – the importance of ritual; the king as an articulator of the social and natural orders; the sacrality of the king – and elucidating in what measure are these questions important for the production of this thesis. From this contextualization, I begin the second part of this project, where I analyse the sacred kingship in Japan, articulating it to the arguments and ideas developed by the «classical authors» associated with sacred kingship. Through the analysis of the particularities that define the symbolic, highly ritualized, political, and social superstructure that is the Japanese imperial family, I try to demonstrate in which way this example develops and expands the problematizations created by Hocart and Frazer. Therefore, I propose a reformulation of certain conceptual and ideological elements, and also the revitalization of kingship studies in anthropology, demonstrating how it is very contemporary and heavily anthropological, that deals with questions associated with the structuration of social and cultural life, as well as with human condition itself.
