Pessoas como nós: um estudo etnográfico na Liga Portuguesa dos Direitos do Animal

Abstract

O relacionamento entre humanos e não-humanos encontra-se vincado na existência do ser humano. Estes relacionamentos têm sido estudados no âmbito de várias disciplinas, incluindo a Antropologia, devido ao crescente reconhecimento da complexidade de outros seres não-humanos, afastando-nos da anterior visão dos animais como seres desprovidos de qualquer vontade ou senciência. Deste modo, torna-se relevante analisar os contextos nos quais estes relacionamentos ocorrem, bem como, as variáveis que os influenciam. Em Portugal, nos últimos anos, tem-se assistido a um incremento das leis referentes à proteção dos animais, sobretudo para os de companhia. Partindo da lei nº8/2017, que reconheceu os animais como seres dotados de sensibilidade, retirando-os da categoria de “coisas”, a presente investigação visa compreender de que forma a alteração do estatuto de entidades não-humanas, mais concretamente animais de companhia, poderá ser um fator influenciador na nossa perceção e interação com os mesmos. Será possível pensar que uma simples mudança de estatuto poderá alterar o nosso relacionamento com outros seres não-humanos? Terá existido alguma mudança com esta Lei? Para tal, foi elaborado um estudo etnográfico numa ONGA que tem atividade no âmbito da proteção dos animais, a Liga Portuguesa dos Direitos do Animal. O trabalho de campo elaborado no seio desta organização permitiu não só a observação do desenvolvimento da legislação, bem como a sua aplicação e o modo como afeta o relacionamento e perceção das pessoas para com os animais de companhia.

The relationship between humans and non-humans is engraved within human existence itself. These relationships have been studied by many fields of research, Anthropology being one of them, due to the ever-growing acknowledgement of the complexity of other than human entities. This recognition has been mainly given to animals, which are increasingly seen as conscious and sentient beings, moving further away from the notion of animals as beasts deprived of any kind of will and sensibility. Having this in consideration, the analysis of the contexts in which these interactions take place, as well as, the variables that might afflict them, become relevant subjects. In Portugal, during the past few years, there has been a rise in lawmaking concerning animal protection and animal welfare, with great focus on pets. By means of the law nº 8/2017, that recognized animals as sensitive beings, removing them from the category of “things”, the withstanding dissertation intends to grasp in which way the alteration of the status of non-human entities, focusing on pets, might be a crucial factor in a shift of our perception and interaction with them. In order to achieve this, fieldwork was elaborated in one of the few national environmental NGOs that works in animal protection, the Portuguese League for Animal Rights. The field research conducted within this organization allowed me to have an inside perspective on how legislation is designed, applied and in which way it affects the relations between humans and their pets.
